Letter From the Chair

June 07, 2019 1:00 PM
Mark L. Diana, PhD, MBA, MSIS

It’s early summer, and in New Orleans that means it’s already hot. Summer also means that we graduated another outstanding class of MHA, MPH, and PhD students. This edition of our newsletter contains stories on some of our recent graduates and the impact they are already having in the field.

I am excited to share with you that the MHA program rose to number 17 in the most recent US News rankings of healthcare management programs, up five spots from number 22. Our program was ranked number 39 immediately after Hurricane Katrina and has risen steadily since then. Our goal is to reach the top ten in the next cycle of rankings, and with your support, I am confident we will reach that goal.

We are continuing to plan the 50th Anniversary activities for the coming year, and you will find information in this newsletter on some of the activities that we are planning during homecoming. We hope that you will mark your calendars and plan to join us.

Our department is growing! We are currently searching for two new faculty members and an MHA program director. Dr. Arthur Mora, our current MHA program director, has taken a position as the Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center. We will miss Dr. Mora but wish him the best in this new role. Mora is a two-time alum (MHA and PhD), and we will continue to enjoy his strong support.

I am also pleased to share some other faculty news. Dr. Charles Stoecker has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, and Professor Mollye Demosthenidy has been appointed as the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives. Please join me in congratulating them both.

Thank you for all you do to give back. Our current students will follow in your footsteps and build on all that you have done to provide health care to the people of our communities because of your support.

I invite you to reach out to me with your thoughts, questions, comments and feedback. I look forward to hearing from all of you.
